Nova Scotia - September 21-22/14 - Land of Evangeline - Acadian History

Sunday, September 21

After having such a super time in Halifax, it was time to slow things down a bit, so we made our way to the Land of Evangeline Family Camping Resort near Wolfville, right on the Bay of Fundy, only about an hour's drive. Settled into a nice grassy site and signed up for a two day stay. It was half price for us since we have the Passport America membership. The extent of the gulf tide just blew us away.

Great biking in the area.

Grass and a quiet place, what more can you ask for.

Water level at high tide....

....and when it's low tide, about 6 hours later.

This threatening weather missed us, but Halifax sure got pelted. We left just in time.

It was fun to explore the muddy bottom at low tide.

Nice evening lighting on the shore across this bay.

Monday, September 22

Today the bikes were put to use as we made our way to the Grand-Pré National Historic Site, about 4km away. We were very impressed with the information and presentation about the Acadian history which dominated the area. A great learning experience.

This map shows the area that was reclaimed from the sea, by the Acadians in the 1700's.

A very modern and well done centre.

A horse of a different colour. Very colourful art in the small gallery.

Wood carving depicting the life of the Acadians.

In Longfellow's poem Evangeline,  the romantic heroine depicts the tragedy of the Acadians.  It was a unifying
force of their spirit of nationalism.

An original log that was carved out and used in draining fresh water from
the land, but blocked salt water from entering the fields.

The Acadians were exiled from their land when they became victims in the battles between the French and the British.

These sculptures depict the expulsion in 1755.

Immaculately maintained grounds.

A rebuilt church dedicate to the Acadian culture.

Exceptional stained glass representing their life challenges.

Expulsion scene

Map shows where they were expelled to.

What time is it?

We love this kind of biking, flat, paved and no traffic.

Some funky art along the way.

Grace enjoys tea inside.

Low tide walks at sunset.

Reflecting sun in the brown mudflats

Another day comes to a perfect end.
