Maine, October 1-2/14 - Bar Harbor - Acadia National Park

Wednesday, October 1

All was good with Grace. We crossed the border at Calais, stopping at the visitor centre to pick up information on the state of Maine. Next stop, the very busy touristy town of Bar Harbor on the coast. Saw that the same cruise ship, from St. John, was there, along with thousands of passengers. Spent the afternoon strolling this pretty town and then were off to get a site at the Acadian National Park campground, where we happily stayed for three nights.

First stop after crossing the border was the visitor centre in Calais, which was also a cultural centre.

One of many stately homes in the historic town.

Can you spot Grace?

Our favorite find and possibly a future project for me.

Not too inconspicuous

Garden at a high end inn.

The sign said full, but we went in anyway and were able to get a spot for one night in a handicapped site and the next morning we were successful in getting two more nights in a regular camping spot.

A very short walk brought us to the shore.

Time to call it a day after this.
 Thursday, October 2

We left our site with PeeWee and took the 27 mile Park Loop Road through the park. The main highlights that we were looking forward to was Jordan Pond House, Cadillac Mountain, Sand Beach and Thunder Hole. Most of this road is a one way. A full day outing.

We did the full hike around the lake, taking about two hours.

Jordan Pond

The wooden boardwalk ran along one side of the lake.

Colour changes were in full swing.

The morning started to warm up and by the time we got back, people were enjoying their lunch outside.

The Cadillac Mountain Road leading to the top, sure was steep, winding and a straight drop-off on the edge. Great fun.

Bar Harbor is below, with another cruise ship in town.

Amazing view

One last stop on the way down.

Such a relaxing drive where the speed limit is 30mph.

Large rollers breaking at Sand Beach.

Thunder Hole is a popular attraction. When the waves rush in near high tide, they make a thunderous sound.

Fun watching people get wet.

Cadillac Mountain. Can you see the people on top?

There are only a few spots where you can get on and off the loop. We did both at Seal Harbor.

End of the day.
