Today we hopped on the Island Explorer, which is a free bus ride offered in the park and it even made a stop in the campground, so we were on our way before 10 a.m. to spend the day in Bar Harbor. A highlight was to walk across the sand bar at low tide to Bar Island and spend a leisure day walking the town and then take the last shuttle back to the Backwoods Campground before 9 p.m.
An early morning walk to the ocean to catch the early morning sun. |
It soon disappeared. |
No travel day for PeeWee today. |
The Island Explorer bus service is free and has many routes that take you through the National Park and Bar Harbor. |
Our first item of the day was to walk this sand bar to Bar Island which is only accessible at low tide. |
Waiting to cross |
Any time now |
Now is the time |
On the island now. |
Note cars in right of photo. Not a good idea to park on the bar at low tide. |
Jellyfish left behind when the water receded |
View from the island to the town, with Cadillac Mountain behind. |
The fully exposed sand bar. |
After spending a few hours hiking the island, we made our way back and could see that the tide was slowly coming returning. |
Everything will be under water at high tide. |
Tide driven waves. |
The bar is starting to disappear again. |
Boating activity of every size. |
Some balancing act |
Must have taken a lot of patience |
So inviting, but is wasn't open to the public. |
What an amazing path which led along the shore on one side and large historic homes on the other. |
Cinnamon Fern |
This spring has been running since the 1800's |
Busses run all day - free |
Early evening |
It was a balmy evening to stroll the town. |
