BLM Site to Sunrise RV Park, Kingman, Arizona

Friday, January 31, 2014

Time to move on. We turned off I-40 at Topock, AZ, and headed north on the famous Route 66. This historic route runs between Chicago, Illinois and Topack. A very scenic but slow drive on a somewhat rough road. Our first destination of the day was Oatman, where the attraction are the burros which rule the town. This old gold mining town has come alive again, thanks to the burros. Quite the throwback in time. After taking in the sights and a tasy lunch, we left town and soon were winding our way up a very steep and hairpin road up to the Sitgreaves Pass at 3,550 feet. A little unnerving since there are no guardrails and it's a loooong way down. No big rigs here. A lot of photo stops on the way up and down. Grace was patient. I think. Soon were in Kingman, AZ where we took advantage of the 50% discount rate offered to Passport America club members. A small but very clean facility. Ready for showers and blog updating. It's time consuming to keep it current it does require a good connection.

Our first burro sighting outside of Oatman

In no hurry

A very eclectic town

Patience is needed since they have the right of way. So funny.

The old gold town with a somewhat newer touristy twist

No explanation needed

Hey mister, going my way?

Yeah, there is only one of a kind here.

A local character showing off his Colt 45

This hotel was brought to fame as it served as a honeymoon destination for Clark Gable and Carol Lombard in 1939.

Who ya looking at?

Hope he's part of the town's gunfight entertainment.

Who's having more fun?

One of the many gold mines still in operation in these mountains. Saw a few that were blocked up. We kept looking
something shiny, but no luck.

Looking down on a gold mine and the curvy route we just came up.

Almost like a small cemetary at the summit, think it might be for the ones that perished along the dangerous route.

Naw, don't think we'll stay here
