Nova Scotia - September 14/14 - Miners Museum - Lighthouse Point, Louisbourg

Sunday, September 14

Back on the mainland and ready to explore Nova Scotia.
(Still way too far behind on the blog, so it will be updated when we get a chance).

Don and Carol G., from New Hamburg, Ontario. We met this very nice couple at a campground in Newfoundland and just happened to meet them again on the ferry from Newfoundland. We then spent the night together in a Sydney Walmart.

Woke to a rainy morning.

Ready to learn the history of miners at the Miners Museum in Glace Bay.

All the coal mined here came from plants when this continent was still joined to Africa.

A great museum

A tough and dangerous life

Coal cart

Ready to go underground

Our tour guide Eric, had over 30 years experience in the mine.

Posing in front of coal still in the mine.

All the tunnels were so low that it was impossible to stand up straight.

Eric shows how coal was extracted using an air compressed jack.

Years ago when the mine was active, a German miner started an underground garden like this one.

The company store was known as a Pluck Me Store, because of how the owners took advantage of the miners.

The afternoon drive took us to Louisbourg where the lighthouse
wasn't the main attraction, but the waves were.

Notice man taking photo on right. Massive waves broke along the shore.

The power of the waves was just astounding.

Almost too close, surprisingly Grace didn't get wet.

A pasta supper with a view, second to none, at this location, was just super.
