Newfoundland and East Coast Bound - 2014

From Home to New Brunswick

July 30, 2014

The winter is long behind us and we are looking forward to the next extended road trip to the East Coast and Newfoundland. Will try to keep our progress posted with photographs and some info. Despite a lengthy to do list, we managed to hit the road Wednesday morning.

Wednesday, July 30
Day one was spent on the road and ended at the Cornwall, On. Walmart.
 Thursday, July 31
Day two was another road trip day which ended at another Walmart in Riviere-du-Loup, Quebec. Got there at tea time just as many other units pulled in for the night. Got some supplies.

It looked like a campground the next morning.
Friday, August 1
Checked in at the New Brunswick Visitor Centre for info.

Made a lunch stop at Grand Falls in NB at a very scenic town site.
Stretched our legs in this very pristine and pretty town. It is know for the widest main street in Canada, at 125 feet.

This was an old cemetery, dating back to the late 1700's. This supper spot in Miramichi, NB, turned into our night spot at the very friendly Miramichi Boating and Yacht Club.

Retaining wall at the entrance to the harbour on the Miramichi River.

What a prime location for the night. We had a great chat with some of the members.

It is quite a small yacht club, with only two sailboats. Not quite like Wiarton.
 Saturday, August 2,
Saturday morning market in Chatham, which was only a few minutes away over this major bridge.

Getting ready to take a party crowd over to an island an hour out. This harbour was in Escmic and has the largest lobster boating fleet in New Brunswick, 90 boats. It is between lobster seasons and fisherman were shuttling guests to the island beach.

All loaded and ready to head out. We were told that there would be about 200 boats there. What a beach party that was going to be.

Grace hangs out with the 'local' petrified pioneers at the Kouchibouguac Visitor Centre.

Hiking the boardwalk in Kouchibouguac National Park, south of Miramichi, where we took a campsite for the night.
We had our first bike ride there along the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.

Getting to the main beach was a fair hike on the boardwalk.

Sunday, August 3

Sunday market. Quite the happening place, with food, craft vendors and local entertainment.

Grace bought some local sandfire greens, a type of salt water plant. Tasty but stringy and a little labour intensive to prepare.

The Old Ramblers, a local group.

Lots of fishing, boating and tourist actvity at Pointe du Chene, on a long pier. It was a very hot and humid day.
